Ben Stevenson says he had no hesitation joining Pompey when handed the chance.

The 26-year-old midfielder has joined from Forest Green and is hungry for success, having helped Rovers to League Two promotion in 2021-22.

'You say the word ‘Portsmouth’ and it’s a no-brainer — this is an absolutely massive club and everyone knows it,' he told the club website. 'I jumped at the opportunity and I’m really excited to be here. The ultimate aim is to get promoted and that matches my ambitions.

'I’m not a young player anymore, but I still have the same hunger — if anything, I’m even hungrier to achieve more. This is the perfect place for me to hopefully go to the next level. It’s a strong, competitive league and I’m sure we’re capable of taking a step forward.

'I played here before, but that was during Covid, so there were no fans and I was disappointed at the time. But people I’ve spoken to a few people who have said the atmosphere is great and I can’t wait to see what that looks like.

'I like to get on the ball and play, although I’ve also learnt how to mix it up when needed over the years. I’ll keep things ticking and try to progress the team forward.'

Stevenson was at Coventry, playing alongside Pompey favourite Michael Doyle after making his debut in a League Cup tie again the Blues.

He said of Doyle: 'He’s someone who’s played here and been successful here. He told me how much he enjoyed it and that I would also enjoy it. He’s a great player — and also a great person off the pitch. He had nothing but good things to say about the club.

'I was only 18 or 19 when I played alongside him and he let me know early on what it was going to be like! I drew a lot from him and it helped me to mature quicker.'

On his debut - which ended in victory over Pompey - Stevenson told the club site: 'I remember that one clearly and it actually went to extra-time, so my legs took a bit of a battering. It was a really good game and the support was excellent for both sides. The Pompey fans made a lot of noise.'
